About Embrace Foundation

Embrace Foundation offers a variety of educational and social activities in which people can learn to embrace community, nature, development, society, understanding, reflection, each other and Islam.Our work is aimed at people from different backgrounds, primarily New Muslims, Converts and Non-Muslims.We:•Educate and encourage research and reflection.•Develop people in order to positively impact those around them for the general good of society.•Challenge the unnecessary barriers between us.•Raise awareness on important issues.•Provide opportunities for those who care about their communities.•Promote the reality that 'we're all in this together'. From educational weekends in the British countryside, to pilgrimages to Mecca and courses in southern Spain; we educate, offer support, care, help and encourage all those who understand that our communities and society at large are where we live and promote that we can act as bridges for people around us, helping everyone to embrace each others positive qualities.

UK Weekends

The UK weekends were founded by the late Sufyan Maurice Gent and his wife Bahiya in the 90s.The original idea was to take both Non-Muslims and New Muslims into a quiet, tranquil countryside setting and as a group be introduced to educational presentations, group sessions, discussions and questions and answers, all on issues relevant to those in attendance.We now hold these weekends and camps 4 times every year across the UK, some cater for families.Recent locations have included the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and North Wales.Past weekend presentations have included: Green Islam: The Environment, Contributing to Society, Back to Basics, Muslims in Britain and Science and Architecture.We endeavour to invite speakers and presenters who fully understand the contextual backgrounds of those in attendance and can be seen as positive role models to all.Details of our next weekend can be found by clicking here.

Convivencia Project

The Convivencia Project offers opportunities to explore and experience people from different backgrounds working together for the common good.Community Cohesion is a term which everyone is talking about nowadays. Convivencia, on the other hand is a Spanish word which implies togetherness and coexistence and was coined way back in Medieval Muslim Spain.Convivencia referred to an exemplary society made up of Jews, Christians and Muslims living together.The old saying History repeats itself is often used with negative implications. We believe there is a lot to learn from the past with positive outlook. Journey of a Lifetime

The Hajj, or pilgrimage is the 5th and final pillar of Islam which every Muslim must perform when able.Hajj, which literally means 'aim', is often referred to as the Journey of a Lifetime. The hajj is an experience often seen to teach invaluable lessons of benefit to one for the rest of their lives. Virtues such as patience, community, equality, brotherhood, selflessness and piety are just a few of the human qualities a person is exposed to on such a journey.With the help and support of our generous funders we have been able to offer subsidised support for Muslim Converts to perform Hajj and Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage).We encourage all who are chosen in the programme, to ponder upon the experience and consider how they can pass on the beautiful lessons learned to the rest of society upon their return to the UK.The numbers of awards and places are limited and differ from year to year. Both men and women are invited to apply using our new Journey of a Lifetime application form.We particularly encourage applications from those who can demonstrate continuous contribution to their local communities.Details of this year's Journey of a Lifetime programme can be found by clicking here.

Reports and Publications

We gather reports and publications considered to be relevant to the aims of Embrace Foundation and make them accessible on our website. The themes of such reports and publications can vary, but will usually raise awareness on community and social issues and topics relevant to New-Muslims and Non-Muslims interested in Islam.We invite academics, universities and other organisations to post links to their reports and publications on our site. We also offer funding for research, publications and printing. Currently under development-examples of supported work are the City Guides, which are to be distributed across major cities throughout the UK.The reports and publications page will be launched soon, please check regularly for updates.

Embrace Foundation offers bursaries and awards to people considered to be outstanding contributors to their local communities.We aim to encourage and equip those with the potential and motivation to continue their personal development for the general good of society. Academic courses and professional training and development within the UK are the main areas we deal with. Please note, the application process for Educational Bursaries is not yet live. Just a quick update to keep you all in the know on what programmes/events Embrace Foundation has planned and those which are in the pipeline for the next few months:1. Journey of a lifetime; Hajj. We are awaiting final confirmations as to whether this year's programme will go ahead. Those who have applied will be informed as soon as any updates are received. Regular countryside walks; We're currently making final prepartations with Alex Gent to arrange a series of scenic walks in different parts of the UK's countryside. The next walk is likely to happen within the next few weeks and likely to be in North Yorkshire. Watch this space...3. Four-Week Arabic Language study programme in Qatar; If confirmed, the programme will take place in December/January and will include Arabic Language, basic Islamic studies and a chance to meet with different organisations in Qatar. If you're interested, send us an email to info_embracefoundation.org.uk4. Weekend retreat in Dublin; Will offer opportunity to view the Islamic heritage of Ireland including viewing the book of Kells and Islamic influence on it. A unique chance to see some of the rarest Islamic/Arabic Qu'rans and manuscripts in the world at the Chester Beatty Library, including a private viewing of the archives, and an educational element in one of Europe's largest moques and Islamic centres. Is expected to be in the first quarter of 2012.5. Weekend event in Sheffield. Before end of 20116. Nov 2011The 2011 Application Form is now available to download.Please note; The journey of a lifetime programme this year has not yet had funding nor number of places confirmed. Due to circumstances out of our control the confirmation of places is usually around one month before scheduled departure date and last minute confirmations are frequent. Adam Kelwick

Adam Kelwick lives in the Wavertree area of Liverpool and has been involved in several community grass-roots organisations in a voluntary capacity since his teens. He has studied International Business and Management at Universities in Liverpool, Toulouse and Barcelona. He is also a qualified Muslim Chaplain and involved with many diverse communities across Merseyside. Mr Kelwick sits on the boards of Arabic Cultural Foundation, Merseyside Play Action Council and is a governor of Smithdown Primary School. On a national level he manages the UK projects of Human Care International and is Founder and Director of Embrace Foundation.

Martin Bilal Harrison

Martin was born and raised in Leeds, West Yorkshire. An IT Manager by profession, he devotes his spare time undertaking voluntary work with charities like Leeds New Muslims and Leeds Grand Mosque.

Ismaeel Simon Jones

Ismaeel Jones is based in Sheffield and comes from a background of supporting and helping young people.He has previously worked as an outreach youth worker, children's rights worker for NSPCC, social worker and is currently an education welfare officer and passionate about engaging with disaffected youngsters. Mr Jones embraced Islam in 1997. He's an active committee member of the Sheffield New Muslim Project and founder of the United Colours of Islam, an organisation which aims to provide training, workshops and events to engage, empower and unite the diverse communities of Sheffield, regardless of ethnicity or faith.
